How To Use A Y-Strap Support System With A Pontoon Boat Cover

November 13th, 2012 | Posted by melissa in Pontoon Boat Covers | Pontoon Supplies

Y-strap support systems provide excellent structural support for boat covers. They provide a tight tent-like shape ensuring that water and debris slide off of boat covers easily. This prevents tears that result from excess pressure on the covers over time, the buildup of mold and mildew and other such problems.

The Y-strap support system is designed to fit a “standard” style of boat and size. So, what do you do if you have a pontoon boat but want to use a Y-strap support system?

Simply connect two support systems together to create a “double-Y” configuration. Here’s how:

  1. Position support poles
Place the two support poles in the center of the boat, approximately 1/3 of the way in from either end of your pontoon boat, in line with each other.
  2. Connect support poles
Use the 40-foot strap to connect the two support pole centers. Make sure the strap is taut to keep poles securely in place. A second strap can be used if additional length is needed. In this case, simply loop one strap through the other and adjust the length of one or both straps to fit.
  3. Attach fore and aft straps
Connect the two straps from each of the Y-strap support systems to the tow hooks at either end of your boat.
  4. Connect short straps to support poles
Attach the fore straps to the support pole at that end of the boat. Secure tightly to ensure the support pole remains in a vertical position. Repeat with straps at the aft end of the boat.
  5. Inspect for possible “chafing”
If straps are rubbing seats or any vinyl part, place a towel or cloth underneath to prevent unnecessary wear and chafing of the vinyl material.
  6. Install pontoon boat cover
Your boat is now well protected!
